"With Y'all I'm Born Again" is a 1979 duet written by Carol Connors and David Shire that originated on the soundtrack of the 1979 motion moving picture Fast Suspension. It was performed by Motown recording artists Billy Preston and Syreeta Wright (credited equally Syreeta) and became an international hit for the duo, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100[2] and number two on the UK singles chart.[3]
History [edit]
The music from Fast Pause was credited to David Shire and James DiPasquale, and Carol Connors put words to four of the songs on the soundtrack album. Connors recalls, "I had written most of the lyrics to 'With You I'm Born Again' in 22 minutes, but I couldn't observe ii words and it was driving me crazy."[4] The right words came to her on her way to an ice cream parlor, where she requested a pencil and paper along with her order. "I had finally found it—the line I was seeking--'Come up show me your kindness, in your arms I know I'll observe this'—and I wanted to get information technology down on paper."[4]
Motown executive Suzanne de Passe chose Wright as Preston's partner for the 2 duets that had been written for the movie,[5] and each singer too had a solo number to cut for the soundtrack album as well. Connors recalled, "Billy and Syreeta were originally non very fond of the idea of recording together—they each wanted to practise their own thing, but this worked out extremely well for both of them."[4] The reluctant pair were surprised past the success of "With Y'all I'm Born Again". "Though both liked the song, they never dreamed of it existence a hit single."[6]
Connors noted the impression some were left with by the song and Preston. "When David Shire heard Billy Preston play the song on the organ, he said to me, 'At present I know why he's a star.'" Connors also shared, "The late peachy Marvin Hamlisch told me that he was in the barber chair when he first heard the song on the radio and stood straight up in anaesthesia, narrowly missing getting his throat cutting by the pair of scissors. Truthful story."[4]
But radio airplay and record sales almost never happened. The Fast Break soundtrack was released in early 1979, when disco still permeated the airwaves, and the other of the duo's recordings from the album, the dance melody "Go for Information technology", was chosen equally the single that would exist issued to promote the album. That choice barely fabricated a dent in the charts, spending 1 week on the Disco singles chart at number fourscore in Billboard magazine[7] and "bubbling under" the Billboard Hot 100 for 1 week at number 108.[ii]
The film did not go much attention, either, and Preston described their next try to requite "With You lot I'g Born Once more" more exposure, explaining that "after the moving picture didn't do very well, the [soundtrack] album didn't sell well. Nosotros pulled it off that album and put it on mine."[vi] Preston's anthology, Late at Night, came out later in 1979, merely even with that reissue of the song, Preston insisted that "we still didn't think of information technology every bit a single."[half dozen] It did, however, begin to get airplay in the European market place[6] and was finally released equally a single at the end of the year.
Another hurdle the song had to overcome was the fact that its title did not click with some record buyers. "Connors says her merely regret about 'With Yous I'thou Built-in Again' is that she didn't championship it 'Come Bring Me Your Softness'. 'Berry Gordy called me to let me know we had a monster hit on our hands but that early on many people were going into tape stores asking for "Come up Bring Me Your Softness", and some tape sales were lost as a result.'"[4] The fact that the phrase "born again" is often associated with Christianity may have too been confusing, and Connors admitted, "Many thought the song had religious overtones, but Robert Culp and I were lovers at the time, and that'due south the way we felt well-nigh one another. Culp was the inspiration."[4] The singers also felt the song could be interpreted in a religious context as well every bit being a romantic love song. Preston explained, "When nosotros saw Fast Break, we understood it was a romantic song. Simply I think of information technology as religious because God is dear, so information technology all inter-relates."[6] This religious attribute would after be played upward by the show Glee in the season ii episode "Duets", when the characters Finn Hudson (played by Cory Monteith) and Rachel Berry (played by Lea Michele) perform a shortened version of the song dressed equally a priest and a Catholic schoolgirl respectively.
Chart success [edit]
"With You I'm Born Once more" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in the issue of the magazine dated December 8, 1979, and peaked at number four over the course of 29 weeks.[ii] The following week marked its first advent on the U.k. singles chart[8] and on Billboard'due south list of the 50 about pop Adult Contemporary songs in the U.S., and both nautical chart runs resulted in a number 2 showing.[9] [3] It likewise started three weeks on the magazine'due south Hot Soul Singles nautical chart in the January xix, 1980, issue and got as high as number 86.[10] It was Preston'southward biggest hitting in five years and the biggest pop hitting of Wright's career.
